Gynecomastia is a condition where the shape and appearance of a man’s breasts resemble that of a female breast. For men with this condition who feel less masculine or are embarrassed by their appearance and who do not like how they look in clothes much less with their shirt off, Tucson, Arizona surgeon, Dr. Eades, offers men a surgical solution.
Surgical treatment for gynecomastia produces a flatter, firmer, masculine appearing chest. This surgery can improve self-esteem, restore confidence, and make for an easier time at the gym or pool. If you desire a more masculine look to your chest, you may benefit from male breast reduction.
This surgery is performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia and depending on the extent of work required, surgery can last two to four hours. Typically, a combination of liposuction, excision of breast tissue and removal of excess skin is used. In some cases, a nipple transposition may be required to match the new position of the chest. Scarring from the procedure will vary based on the severity of your case and the approach that needs to be taken to correct it. For smaller procedures, an areolar incision surrounding the nipple is used and is least noticeable as it heals. An incision may also be made, but concealed within the contours of the bottom of your chest. After a consultation with Dr. Eades, you will have a better idea of the steps required to help you reach you aesthetic goals.
Before their procedure, it is important that patients designate a caregiver or helper to assist during recovery time. Caregivers should be able to drive patients home from the outpatient surgery center and provide assistance the first day after surgery. Patients can resume mild aerobic activity such as walking or treadmill 2 to 3 days after surgery. Most patients return to office or desk type work in two weeks. More strenuous exercise can be resumed at 3 weeks.
Bruising and swelling post-procedure should reside over the course of 3-4 weeks. It is normal to feel a few lumps during this time, but massaging those areas will assist in breaking up the scar tissue. You can expect to see full results of your surgery within 3-6 months.
